The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is a tradition for many families (and one of my personal favorites!). Watching the parade on TV is fun, but we want to take it a step further this year… let’s make our own Thanksgiving Day Parade! This is the perfect holiday activity.
The Parade Route STEM project uses magnets and the Winkle Crate box! If you have your November Winkle Crate — perfect, you have all the supplies you’ll need. If you don’t subscribe to The Winkle yet, you can probably find most of these supplies around your house.
The instructional video for this project can be seen here.
The first step is one of the most fun: create your city! Draw your cityscape and parade route on the bottom of your box. The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade always marches through New York City. You could recreate New York City, or make a completely unique city for your parade to travel through. This is YOUR parade!
Once you’ve made your city how you like it with your parade route, it’s time to make the floats. Glue magnets on the bottom of each of your floats. Make sure to glue the correct side to your float, so you can control your parade from below the box. For tips and details on how to do this, head to the instructional video where this step is explained thoroughly. In the instructional video for this project, we’ll also show you how to make your own turkey float using pipe cleaners! The floats are another great opportunity to get creative and make this parade all your own.
Your parade is ready! Line up those floats, play some music, and march!
This is one of our favorite Winkle projects so far. There’s so much opportunity for creativity. Nobody’s parades will look the same! We would love to see your unique parade. Take a picture or video and send it to us on Facebook or Instagram. We might even share it on our page!
