Bones and Joints

Can you guess how many bones are in your body? 206 bones! There are itty bitty bones and big strong bones, and all of your bones put together make up your skeleton. The smallest bone in the human body is called the stapes, and it’s located in your ear! The biggest bone in the human body is called the femur. Your femur is in your thigh. It begins at your hip and connects to your knee.

Bones have really important jobs, including:

  • 1. Bones support our bodies by holding up muscles, skin, and organs.
  • 2. Bones make our skeleton, and the skeleton gives our bodies their shape.
  • 3. Bones protect delicate organs. Your skull protects your brain, and your rib cage protects your heart, lungs, and kidneys.
  •  

Those are just a few things bones do for you! Another thing bones help with is movement. When two or more bones meet up and move together, that’s called a joint. Joints make it possible to move our skeleton. Without them, we wouldn’t be able to move at all! Can you find joints on your body? Take a look at your elbows and knees!

Our bones do so much work for us, so what can we do to help strengthen and protect our bones? Here are a few ideas:

  • Consume Calcium. Calcium is the most important mineral for bone health. Milk, cheese, yogurt, and fish are great sources of calcium.
  • Get lots of Vitamin D. Like calcium, Vitamin D is an important mineral for bones. Again, milk is a good source, and you can even get Vitamin D from being outside in the sun!
  • Eat lots of vegetables. Vegetables are a great source of Vitamin C. Vitamin C stimulates bone-producing cells and can even protect bone cells from damage.
  • Exercise. Exercising and lifting weights is a great way to strengthen bones. Exercising has so many benefits for your whole body!
